BERGAMO: THE CITY OF THOUSAND

The city of Bergamo, “Bèrghem” in dialect, is divided into two parts distinct from the imposing Venetian walls that since 2017, are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The historic center of Città Alta is home to most of the most significant monuments, such as the charming Piazza Vecchia, the ancient Campanone, the Duomo, the Colleoni Chapel, the Angelo Mai library and the Palazzo della Ragione.

The modern center of Bergamo Bassa, however, is equally rich in shops, restaurants and events that are organized along the Centro Piacentiniano and Via XX Settembre.

Also in the Città Bassa, you can visit the Accademia Carrara, a gallery that offers a journey of five centuries through the history of Italian art from the Renaissance to the nineteenth century and GAMeC, the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, which with its eclectic exhibitions, manages to capture the attention of a very diverse audience.

Bergamo is nicknamed “The city of the Thousand” because of the large number of volunteers from Bergamo who took part in the expedition of the Thousand led by Giuseppe Garibaldi.
